Information about driving in Bulgaria with a vehicle

A “Passenger" is any individual passing the state borderline of the Republic of Bulgaria. Upon crossing the state borderline of the Republic of Bulgaria passengers may import and export commodities that in type, quantities, and value are not of a commercial nature. These do not include objects the passenger carry for personal use and consumption objects.

Passengers have the right to import at no custom duty or import fees the objects necessary to the foreign individuals for their stay in the country, which in their type and quantity correspond to both purpose and the duration of their stay, as well as consumption objects:
-Tobacco products /passengers over 16 years of age/ - cigarettes - 200 items, or other tobacco products - 250 gr.;
-Alcoholic beverages /passengers over 16 years of age/ - wine - 2 litres, and alcoholic liquors - 1 litre;
Other drinks: coffee - 500 gr., or coffee extract - 200 gr., tea - 100 gr., or tea extract - 40 gr.;
-Perfumes - 50 ml. and toilet water - 0,250 ml.

According to the Bulgarian traffic low the using of seat belts is obligatory on all seats.

Braking the traffic regulations is followed by penalty – usually some tens levs.

OMV, Shell, Petrol and LUK Oil are the biggest petrol station chains in Bulgaria. Most petrol stations require cus-tomers to pay at the cashier desk in cash. Self-service is not very popular.

You should always check the emergency equipment of your car because there are some things required by law: emergency medical box, fire extinguisher, triangle, spare tyre with rim, jack screw and lug wrench.

Visa information for visiting and staying in Bulgaria

The regulations for visiting Bulgaria are different according to the nationality of the visitor.

Holders of valid ordinary passports from some countries do not need a visa to visit Bulgaria for a maximum of 90 days within each period of six months.

Holders of valid ordinary passports from other group of countries do not need a visa to visit Bulgaria for a maximum of 30 days within each period of six months.

Passport holders from third group of countries need a visa only if their stay in Bulgaria exceeds 30 days, if they need to enter the country repeatedly for a longer period of time, or if they need a long-term visa.

All passport holders of the rest of the countries need visas to enter Bulgaria.

Visas are issued only by a Bulgarian Embassies and Consulates abroad.

By applying for a Bulgarian visa, applicants agree that their personal data, appearing on the application form, would be electronically stored and processed, and if necessary, passed on to the relevant authorities of other countries as required by Bulgaria's international obligations.

Visas are issued only to holders of passports or travel documents that are valid for at least three months beyond the holder's period of stay in Bulgaria and have at least one blank page.

From January 1, 2007, a new “European Union Citizens and Members of Their Families Entry and Residence in and Departure from the Republic of Bulgaria Act” define the terms and the procedures under which European Union citizens and members of their families, citizens of states - parties to the European Economic Space Agreement, the citizens of the Swiss Confederation and the members of their families who are not citizens of the European Union, the European Economic Space and the Swiss Confederation, may enter, reside in and leave the Republic of Bulgaria.

It is necessary to underline that the rules often change and therefore, to ensure that you receive the correct information about visiting and staying in Bulgaria we recommend that you contact the Bulgarian embassy in your country or the Embassy in the nearest country.
